2020 Nukeproof Dissent: Everything you need to know

Nukeproof’s bikes have always had racing at the core of their bikes. They have always been developed and tested by  their race team. This shows that they are serious about producing durable and very capable bikes. Their race results are testament to how good they are. The 2020 Nukeproof Dissent is their latest downhill mountain bike and it has come a long way since the original Nukeproof Scalp that was brought out in 2012.

The 2020 Nukeproof Dissent replaces the Pulse. It is a whole new design with modern geometry, a new suspension linkage system and a serious amount of coolness.

Overview

The brief for the 2020 Nukeproof Dissent’s engineers was to create a downhill bike that could test different progression curve theories at once. In short, this means that you can adjust the feeling of the bike with a four position flip chip. This is so you can decide on the optimum riding characteristics for you. If this sounds complicated, it isn’t (for the rider). But, for the engineers it must have created a few headaches. Luckily, their hard work paid off and worked better than expected. Sam Hill took the prototype of the 2020 Nukeproof Dissent to victory on its first outing at Crankworx during the Garbanzo downhill race.

Suspension

The rear suspension link is totally new for the 2020 Nukeproof Dissent. It now pushes rather than pulls the shock. The idea behind this, is to reduce the loads and the stresses inflicted on the frame. This means that the frame can be made lighter, while improving its durability. This change makes the Dissent 400g lighter than the Pulse.

Frame Details

The engineers had a number of goals to achieve with the frame design. They wanted to reduce weight and increase stiffness. The design that they came up with also makes the suspension more progressive, while improving how the bike pumps. Additionally, the design lets the bike sit higher in the travel, improves cornering stability and gives it a lively feel.

The flip chip at the main pivot gives you the choice of four different linkage settings. This allows you to change the action of the suspension to your own preference. Each position increases how progressive the suspension is, with position four being the most progressive.

Interestingly, the flip chip doesn’t alter the geometry of the bike. It only alters the sag rate by 1%, so you shouldn’t need a different spring rate.

You get even more adjustment on the rear end of the bike too. The 2020 Nukeproof Dissent has a flip chip on the chainstay at the wheel axle. This has three different setting to adjust the length of the rear end of the bike (435, 440, 445mm for the 27.5-inch version; 445, 450, 455mm for the 29-inch version.

With all this adjustability and choice of wheel size, Nukeproof have designs a downhill bike that will cater for any rider that has a thing for gravity based mountain biking.

Geometry and Sizing

The 27.5″ wheeled version is available in S, M, L and XL sizes, while the 29er is available in M, L and XL. The 27.5″ and 29″ frames are totally different.

The 2020 Nukeproof Dissent comes in 27.5″ and 29″wheel options. Which wheel size you choose is down to personal preference and how you like you bike to feel. The bike that fits you best will be the one that makes you go faster. But, in general the 27.5″ version will feel more nimble and be easier to change direction quickly. But, the 29″ will be faster in a straight line as long as you get one with the perfect reach and you can keep you bum away from the rear wheel. This means that taller riders may prefer the 29er, while shorter riders may prefer the 27.5″ wheels.

Who is it for?

The 2020 Nukeproof Dissent is an awesome downhill mountain bike. It will suit most downhill riders, thanks to the adjustability and wheel size choice. I can really see this being a popular bike with privateer downhill mountain bike racers.
