2020 Nukeproof Reactor: Everything you need to know
I am a big Nukeproof fan, and my current bike of choice is the excellent Mega. But in this post, I am going to give you a rundown of the new 2020 Nukeproof Reactor.
The Reactor fills the gap between the Scout hardtail and the Mega enduro bike. This makes it Nukeproof’s new trail bike and is 100% new, rather than the old TR badged Mega. It is a mid-travel trail bike and comes with 27.5″ and 29″ wheeled options.
The 2020 Nukeproof Reactor will be available from mid-October and will have four carbon options to choose from. You can also just buy the frames if you want to build your perfect bike to your specification. Prices start at £2,7499 and go up to £5,399.99 for the fancy RS version.
The Reactor is the product of listening to the requirements stated by Nukeproof’s in house team and the Chainreaction-Mavic race team. Therefore, it has had plenty of rider input during the design and testing phases.
What is it and who is it for?
The 2020 Nukeproof Reactor is an aggressive trail bike. It is primarily designed for riding at trail centres, but without limiting you to this type of riding. Therefore, you can take your new Reactor on steep technical trails too, where it will also excel.
The choice between 27.5″ and 29″ wheels makes this bike appealing to more riders. This is because the wheel choice is down to your personal preference and riding style. If you prefer your bike with great manoeuvrability and a playful feeling, the 27.5″ wheels are the best choice. If raw speed is your thing, go for the 29er as long as you fit it properly.
Frame Details
With the Nukeproof Reactor, you get a choice of alloy or carbon frame materials. This is the first time Nukeproof’s carbon frames have been 100% carbon, as before their carbon frames came with an alloy rear triangle. However, they are offering an all-alloy version, for those that don’t feel it necessary to go with the full carbon version.
The downtube, chainstays and seat stays are protected with rubber covers to reduce damage from rocks pinging off your frame and chain slap.
The frame is kept nice and tidy with internal cable routing. This will also protect the cables in the event of a crash. Additionally, there is routing for a remote to lock out the shock.
The bottom bracket is a threaded affair, which means it is easier to maintain than the push-fit type. There is enough room on the downtube for a full-sized water bottle cage.
Suspension Details
The 4 bar Horst linkage suspension has been engineered to reduce the bobbing effect that you get while pedalling. This system also gives you a nice progressive feel, while soaking up the small bumps and giving you great mid-stroke support for aggressive riding. All this means that you will be able to climb efficiently and have serious fun on the way back down on a well-planted bike.
The travel on the 2020 Nukeproof Reactor is 150mm unless you go for the higher end RS, which gives you 160mm. The rear gives you 140mm of travel.
The suspension is straightforward to set up on this bike. All you need to do is download the RockShox Trailhead App and enter the serial number of your suspension. This will give you suggested settings as a base level you can play with to suit your own preference. The fork and shock are not too complicated, as you can only set the rebound on the shock and the low-speed compression on the fork. This stops you overthinking about your suspension set up.
Geometry
The figures for the 2020 Nukeproof geometry are bang up to date with modern bikes. It a reasonably slack bike with a roomy feel, thanks to its reach. This adds up to a fun and stable bike, especially on descents. The short chainstay length helps give the bike a nimble feeling, increasing the fun factor.
The geometry figures are of a bike that can be ridden everywhere. A comfortable bike to climb and a fun nimble bike to whip around the trails on the way down.
But this geometry is adjustable! You get two settings “trail” and “rail”. You can swap between each setting with a 6mm Allen key. The “Trail” setting lowers the bottom bracket by 6mm and is for those days when you are riding more technical trails with ruts where you need a bit more pedal clearance. The “Rail” setting is for those days when you are riding smoother terrain where pedal clearance is not such an issue.
Ride Characteristics
As I said before, the reach of this bike will give you a nice roomy feel to the cockpit. This will also make it nice and comfortable while you are on the pedals. Your hips are positioned right over the pedals too, this will mean pedalling is efficient, and the suspension linkage system adds to the efficiency with minimum bobbing up and down. Of course, climbing is made a lot easier with the 12-speed drivetrain too. Higher spec models come with the 12 speed SRAM Eagle drivetrain.
This is a very versatile bike, but with this being a trail bike, it will feel a lot more poppy than the Nukeproof Mega. The Mega is designed to soak up the big bumps, while the Reactor is designed to give you a supple ride over smaller bumps. Therefore, this is mainly for riding through the woods and whizzing along singletrack. The Reactor is most at home on natural trails, but you will also have lots of fun in the bike parks.
Handling
When it comes to descending the 2020 Nukeproof Reactor is designed to give you confidence, thanks to its stability. There is lots of support from the suspension, which will encourage you to get airborne.
In comparison to the Mega, the Reactor will be more engaging on smoother terrain. This will make your ride more fun as the Mega is a bit overkill for trail riding. But, don’t be mistaken, the Reactor is still a very capable bike when it comes to technical terrain. The shorter travel will give it a playful feeling while still being composed.
With the bike in the “Rail” setting, it instils more confidence, as the lower and slacker geometry will allow you to push it more. It will also give you more stability on technical descents.
Nukeproof bill the Reactor as an aggressive trail bike. If you are looking for a fun, fast and well-made trail bike. The 2020 Nukeproof Reactor should be at the top of your list.

What do you think?
Are you going to buy a 2020 Nukeproof Reactor? If so, why? I would love to know your thoughts and questions, so please let me know in the comments section below.
If you are looking for something a bit cheaper, you should also check out the Vitus Mythique, which is an excellent value for money trail bike too.
I like the review that you give here. It looks like a great bike, and I would love to own one, but my problem is, I don’t have that much money. Is there another brand that you would recommend that would be a little cheaper? Mostly I have bought Wall-Mart bikes, and I have a problem with the frame cracking when going over rough terrain. I want a good bike, just not one that cost $2,000. I know you get what you pay for, but there has to be a cheaper solution, doesn’t there? Any help would be great.
Thanks, Payton.
Hi Payton,
You really do get what you pay for. If you are on a budget, I would recommend the Vitus Nucleus. It is a hardtail, but it is a super fun bike that would keep you entertained for a long time.
I like the versatility that comes along with the 2020 Nukeproof Reactor. Being able to ride at trail centres as well as steep technical trails is ideal. It’s good to know that this bike comes in two wheel sizes and that the larger wheel is for more speedy runs. The carbon frame looks both durable and light and the suspension looks out of this world. It’s a really sleek bike and for such quality the price looks pretty fair. I have some biker friends who find your recommendation as exceptional as I have and I will be passing it along to them, well done and thanks!
Hi Pentrental,
Thanks for your comment and thanks for sharing my post with your friends.
This is a very thorough description of this bike. I would feel comfortable ordering one without even seeing it just from your article. My daughter lives in Colorado and bikes regularly for exercise. I shared your site with her because there is so much information that I know she will be interested in and educate her as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us about mountain biking.
Melissa
