IXS Hack Elbow Pads Review

In this IXS Hack Elbow Pads Review, I will go into the features and what it’s like riding with them. But, if you want a quick overview, I can tell you they are comfortable and lightweight enough for you to forget they are there. However, I can vouch for their excellent protection during a crash.

Why I Bought The IXS Hack Elbow Pads

I used to ride with the POC VPD Air elbow pads. These were great in the early days, but they became useless after lots of use over about four years. The material stretched just enough for them to slip to my wrists halfway down a bumpy downhill run. This was frustrating, so they began to spend most of their time in my backpack.

With my bony elbows left vulnerable, I decided it was time to buy some new pads. After lots of research and try-ons, it was a toss-up between the IXS Hack elbow pads and the Race Face Ambush. The Hacks won my vote with their looks and the fact the Ambush’s velcro straps snagged my jersey.

IXS Hack Elbow Pads Review - First Impressions

As I just mentioned, the IXS Hack elbow pads look great, but they are also super-easy to slip on. They stay in place thanks to two adjustable velcro straps and internal silicone strips top and bottom.

You can expect excellent comfort once you work out the optimum tension on the straps for comfort and security. This feeling is enhanced by the fact they don’t restrict your movement in any way. They feel light and insulated, too, so you’ll soon forget you’re wearing them.

Protection

IXS has given the Hack elbow pads Qmatter protective padding. This impact absorption cushion absorbs the energy and reduces the resonance to a minimum. It forms perfectly around the elbow to provide excellent coverage without going overboard.

I have had a couple of crashes while wearing my IXS Hack elbow pads. Although they weren’t too severe, my elbows came away unscathed. I was impressed that they didn’t move when I hit the ground, which happened a few times with my old POC VPDs.

IXS Hack Elbow Pads Review - Verdict

These elbow pads have become an essential part of my riding gear. Without them, I feel vulnerable but confident while wearing them. I wear my Hacks whenever I’m on my bike. They suit bike park days, fitness rides, and everything in between.

They are easy to put on and easy to forget you’re wearing them until you need them to do their job. Their low profile makes them slim enough to fit under a baggy jersey, but they don’t work as well under tight-fitting ones. Another advantage of their compact size is that you can easily fit them into your backpack while pedaling home after a post-ride beer.
